Salam – Exclusive Properties' AED Program (Automatic External Defibrillation) came into operation on 07/15/2024
The BelaVista Retail Park facilities are now equipped with an automatic external defibrillator and have 17 individuals (Operational
AED) qualified to use AEDs in case of cardiorespiratory arrest. These operators, who work in or by BelaVista Retail Park
received specific training in Basic Life Support and Automatic External Defibrillation. The AED program is licensed by INEM (Portuguese Institute for Medical Emergencies).
AEDs are portable electronic devices that, in situations of cardiorespiratory arrest,
analyze the heart rhythm and, in the appropriate situations, apply an electric shock with the aim of
resuming a normal cardiac cycle and thus preventing the victim's death.
Cardiorespiratory arrest of cardiac origin is the main cause of mortality in developed countries. In Portugal it is estimated that 10,000 cases occur every year, occurring almost
always suddenly, unexpectedly and outside the hospital environment. In the vast majority of cases the only
effective treatment is electrical defibrillation (shock) and the most important factor for the success of
the intervention is the time that elapses between the victim's collapse and the start of basic life support maneuvers and the use of a defibrillator.
In Portugal, the survival rate of a victim of witnessed cardiorespiratory arrest is
less than 3%. This value compares with a 74% survival rate in places with
AED programs.
Salam – Exclusive Properties, Lda. has the support of Ocean Medical to ensure the
medical support for the AED Program, quality control and training of DAE Operators.
The training model that was followed was that of the American Heart Association.
